Good Day!

I don't know about you, but red-eye in photos drives me crazy. I hate having to use my photo editing software to correct a zillion photos for redeye Sometimes it seems impossible to avoid it, but luckily for us there is new and better technology in cameras and printers that can help us out. I've got some info on some new cameras and printers that eliminate redeye automatically and some tips for how you can avoid it in the first place.

Cameras that Remove Red Eye

There are some new cameras on the market that offer several ways to eliminate red-eye quickly and easily before printing. This is different than the traditional red-eye reducing pre-flash (although these cameras still have that feature as well).

In-camera red-eye removal works by analyzing images on your camera to find redeye in your photos. You can preview the corrected image on the LCD and save your corrected photo for printing. KODAK EASYSHARE and Nikon make digital cameras with in-camera red eye removal.

Some of the newest cameras such as the HP Photosmart R725, R727 and R927 digital cameras feature automatic red-eye removal. You just turn on this feature and the camera analyzes and removes red-eye from each photo as you take it. Pretty cool!

Printers That Remove Redeye

You can get printers that automatically remove redeye before you print your pictures. I have the HP PhotoSmart 3310-all-in-one and it has that feature. It's a real help, as my camera doesn't have the red-eye removal features (you can bet my next one will). Many of their other PhotoSmart series printers have automatic red-eye removal as well, including the HP Photosmart 475 Compact Photo Printer and HP Deskjet 460cb Mobile Printer, both of which received Editors Choice awards from PC Magazine.

Tips for Eliminating Redeye

I find it easier to avoid red-eye in the first place, if possible. Here are some suggestions:

  • Make sure your room is well-lit and use extra light sources if possible.
  • If you must use a flash, ask your subject to look in the direction of the camera but not right at the lens.
  • Stand further away from your subject.
