Hi,

Since Passover and Easter are coming up, this month I want to share tips on how to take better portrait shots. Hopefully this will help you capture great shots of your kids in their holiday finery.

Tips for Taking Better Portraits and Closeup Photos

If you have a point-and shoot camera, use your camera's Portrait setting. If you want to use manual settings, set your "Aperture Priority" to the largest aperture possible (smallest f-number). If you're not sure how to do this, check your camera's manual. Also consider the following:

1. Distance of your subject to the background: Your goal is to isolate your subject from their background, so I suggest you put at least 10 feet between you and your subject, and another 10 feet between them and their background.

2. The Eyes Have it. Focus on the eyes: If anything is in focus, it should be the eyes. It is ok to blur, say, the ear a little bit, but make sure the eyes are in focus.

3. Zoom in: Use Zoom to get closer. When taking portraits you want to emphasize the short depth of field, which means your subject is in focus and the background is a little blurred.

Camera Lens Cleaning Solution

Last month I gave you some tips on how to achieve better focus and avoid blur. Aside from camera shake, forgetting to use the shutter half press, and using maximum digital zoom, there is another reason for getting unintentionally blurry photos: a dirty camera lens or filter!

A dirty lens due to fingerprints, dust or pollution is a common problem. Unfortunately, many lens cleaners have a silicone, alcohol or glycerin base and they coat the lens rather than deep clean embedded dirt. Many professional photographers use a product called R.O.R. to clean their camera lens. The surface of your camera lens can get coated with microscopic oil caused by environmental pollution. Most other cleaners do not remove this oily residue. R.O.R., which stands for “residual oil remover,” emulsifies and removes the oil film. The dust will have nothing to stick to and your lens will also stay cleaner longer. You'll find a marked difference in the brightness and clarity of your images. You can also use R.O.R. safely on numerous surfaces such as camcorder lenses, computer monitors, flat screen TVs, cell phone surfaces and many more surfaces. You can get more info on R.O.R. Lens Cleaner here..
