I copped out and bought a new camera (a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.digitalphotos101.com\/blog\/dont-drop-your-camera\/ \">Panasonic Lumix ZS20<\/a> which I love, especially the 20X zoom). \u00a0Looking back, it\u2019s possible that my camera wasn\u2019t doomed, I could have probably replaced the lens for a lot less than buying a new camera. (But did I tell you I love my new Panasonic?)<\/p>\n<p>Usually if you go to a big electronics store and tell the guy at the counter you broke your camera, he will tell you it\u2019s not worth fixing and try to get you to buy a new one. But many times it is worth at least investigating alternatives before you fork out a wad of cash on a new camera. Even if you don\u2019t have a problem right now, this is something to keep in the back of your mind so you don\u2019t have to learn the hard way, like I did.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some tips on a couple of common camera problems and what you can do.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Broken Battery Door or \u00a0Memory Card Tab<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.digitalphotos101.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/camery-battery-door-sm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-713 alignright\" style=\"margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px;\" title=\"camery-battery-door-sm\" src=\"http:\/\/www.digitalphotos101.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/camery-battery-door-sm.jpg\" alt=\"camera battery doors can be replaced\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>The battery door hinges are often on the flimsy side. This is one of the biggest complaints about digital cameras. \u00a0If the door breaks off it can\u2019t hold the battery tight to make the connection. Or maybe the little plastic tab that keeps your memory card in place broke off. That is so frustrating!<\/p>\n<p>You have a perfectly good camera but you can\u2019t get it to turn on because the battery won\u2019t make contact or the SD card won&#8217;t stay in place.\u00a0 Short of taking the Tim Allen (remember <em>Home Improvement Tool Time Tim<\/em>?) duct tape approach, try going\u00a0 to eBay and search for your camera model + battery door. You may be surprised to find a whole market out there of camera parts that you can pick up for a song versus sending your camera in to Canon or Nikon to have them repair it. That battery door replacement could cost you less than $20 instead of $100 ore more if you\u00a0 sending it to the manufacturer for replacement. In fact, I found a replacement door for my old Canon SD1200 for $14 and a lens kits for $24.99! Boy do I feel dumb now that I didn&#8217;t <a href=\"http:\/\/rover.ebay.com\/rover\/1\/711-53200-19255-0\/1?icep_ff3=1&amp;pub=5574846332&amp;toolid=10001&amp;campid=5336361957&amp;customid=&amp;ipn=psmain&amp;icep_vectorid=229466&amp;kwid=902099&amp;mtid=824&amp;kw=lg\" target=\"_blank\">check eBay<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"text-decoration: none; border: 0; padding: 0; margin: 0;\" src=\"http:\/\/rover.ebay.com\/roverimp\/1\/711-53200-19255-0\/1?ff3=1&amp;pub=5574846332&amp;toolid=10001&amp;campid=5336361957&amp;customid=&amp;mpt=[CACHEBUSTER]\" alt=\"\" \/> before I trashed my camera after breaking the lens (but did I say how much I love my new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00728ZBA2\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B00728ZBA2&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=digitalpho00b-20\">Panasonic Lumix ZS20 with 20X zoom?<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=digitalpho00b-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B00728ZBA2\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/>)<\/p>\n<h2>LCD Screen<\/h2>\n<p>A cracked screen can occur easier than you think. This is the screen where you view your pictures. It is very thin and on many cameras it has no protection.\u00a0 If the screen is flat and blends smoothly with the camera body, it probably has glass over the LCD, which provides protection, but if it is slightly recessed it probably doesn\u2019t. In this case you should get a <em>good quality<\/em> screen protector for it.<\/p>\n<p>If you break your LCD, it CAN be repaired and is probably worth your while. Again, on trusty <a href=\"http:\/\/rover.ebay.com\/rover\/1\/711-53200-19255-0\/1?icep_ff3=1&amp;pub=5574846332&amp;toolid=10001&amp;campid=5336361957&amp;customid=&amp;ipn=psmain&amp;icep_vectorid=229466&amp;kwid=902099&amp;mtid=824&amp;kw=lg\" target=\"_blank\">eBay<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"text-decoration: none; border: 0; padding: 0; margin: 0;\" src=\"http:\/\/rover.ebay.com\/roverimp\/1\/711-53200-19255-0\/1?ff3=1&amp;pub=5574846332&amp;toolid=10001&amp;campid=5336361957&amp;customid=&amp;mpt=[CACHEBUSTER]\" alt=\"\" \/> I found a repair service for $40 and a new LCD screen for an SD1200 for $16.98.<\/p>\n<h3>To avoid accidental LCD cracks or breaks:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Never put your camera in your pants pocket. You\u2019re liable to sit on it.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t leave your camera in your car in winter or summer.
