Beginners and advanced users will both find Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo XI a robust, easy-to-use digital photo editor at a competive price.

For beginners, the Corel Paint Shop Pro Learning Center (docked on the screen and can be closed when not needed) provides a step-by-step guide to completing a range of common tasks and there is a new companion disk that provides two hours of video demonstrations to walk you through various tasks in an easy-to-understand format.

New features include a Color Changer tool that does a great job of recoloring objects in an image with only one click. For instance, you can easily change the color of a car from blue to red. The new Depth of Field command lets you emphasize an object or person in the foreground by softening the background focus. The new Skin Smoothing command lets you smooth away wrinkles for a younger looking you, but it is very slow.

Time Machine is a fun new feature, found under the Effects menu. This command quickly converts your photos into representations of what they would look like if they were snapped in another era. The Time Machine starts in the early days of photography with the Daguerreotype, used in the 1840's, then Albumen (mid-1950's to 1890), Cyanotype, Platinum (1873 to 1920), Early Color, Box Cameras and then Cross Process (1960 and on).

Although the excellent Corel Paint Shop Album is no longer bundled with Paint Shop Pro Photo XI, there is a new Photo Organizer integrated into the program. You can view scaleable thumbnails of your stored images and video clips or search based on filename, date, file type and size, folder location, keyword tags and ratings. The new Quick Review slide show lets you view mages or video clips in full screen mode, make basic adjustments or add text. There is also improved support for RAW file format and batch processing to apply the same fixes to a group of photos or convert a batch of images to a different file format.

Should You Buy It?

We think Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo XI is a very good option for beginning to advanced photo enthusiasts. It offers powerful Photoshop-like tools for under $100. With the Learning Center and companion disk, the learning curve is virtually eliminated.
