While Corel didn't do a major overhaul like they did with Paint Shop Pro X2, they did make some helpful improvements to Photo Album 6 Deluxe Edition, the newest version of the photo management software.

New Features

A new photo download which automatically downloads and rotates photos. You can also set it to erase your images from your camera and to create an instant slide show of your downloaded images.

The Photo Finder feature of Corel Photo Album 6 automatically finds all your photos and organizes them by date taken. The All Photos View lets you browse your entire photo collection and you can use the software's hierarchical keyword system to find an exact image. The Photo Trays feature lets you manage your images for sharing, emailing and printing.

Corel Photo Album 6 also offers a large selection of templates for calendars, photo greeting cards, scrapbook pages, albums, collages, multimedia slide shows and web galleries that you can create with simple drag-and-drop features.

Editing tools haven't changed much and they are pretty good. The one-click Quick Fix lets you auto-correct the color, contrast, and brightness of your photos. There is a one-click red-eye tool as well as an advanced tool. Other editing features include cropping to standard photos sizes, a panorama stitching tool, a Thinify tool that takes a few pounds off a subject, and black & white or sepia options.

Photo Album 6 Deluxe comes bundled with some helpful free software that makes the whole package quite a bargain. You get:

  • PHOTORECOVERY® ($29 value) to recover accidentally deleted photos

  • Scrapbook Templates ($19.95 value) with over 300 additional templates

  • Scrapbook Templates Vol. II ($19.95 value) with 1000s of templates in bright colors

  • Pixmantec® RawShooter Essentials- Raw file format workflow software

  • MyPublisher BookMaker - Create & order custom hardcover books of your photos

SHOULD YOU BUY IT?

While not quite as good as Photoshop Elements (which incorporates the previously-standalone Photoshop Album), Corel Photo Album is still a solid photo management program with decent editing tools in one package, and the price is very reasonable. A good buy. If you are looking for a combination of easy-to-use photo and video editing, organizing and sharing features, check out the new Corel Digital Studio 2010.
